Leesburg, Florida is a progressive city of more than 23,000 residents that serves nearly twice as many people with electric, natural gas, water, wastewater and reuse water utilities. Known as the “Lakefront City,” Leesburg is a central hub for commerce in Lake County, attracting 50,000 people to work each weekday. The 850-acre Leesburg International Airport was built in 1941 by the Army Air Corps of Engineers to serve as a training base during World War II. It now handles over 50,000 takeoffs and landings annually and provides a large range of aviation services including a U.S. Customs and Border Protection Office. A growing community of aviation businesses are also located on-site. Venetian Gardens, a 64-acre park on Lake Harris, is home to the Venetian Center, Rogers Park Pavilion, Kids Korner playground, Splash Pad, Pat Thomas Stadium and Venetian Cove Marina. The Parks and Recreation Department oversees many youth and adult sports leagues as well as other enrichment and instructional programs. Year round events and festivals such as Black Heritage Festival, Mardi Gras, Leesburg Art Festival, Bikefest, 4th of July and Christmas activities attract thousands of visitors each year. There are also sporting events such as bass fishing and NCAA softball tournaments. The Leesburg Lightning, a team in the Florida Collegiate Summer League, plays baseball each summer at historic Pat Thomas Stadium.
